Decoding the Menu: Understanding Cigar Strength, Size, and Shape
Walking into a humidor for the first time can be overwhelming. Cigars are categorized in myriad ways. Knowing how they are labeled will help you select a stick that matches your mood and available time.
Strength vs. Flavor
It is important to differentiate between strength (the nicotine level or "body") and flavor (the actual taste notes). A cigar can be full of flavor but mild in strength, or vice versa. Cigars are generally categorized into three strength profiles:
Mild (Mellow): Perfect for beginners, these offer lighter, often creamy, grassy, or cedar notes with a minimal nicotine hit.
Medium: The sweet spot for many enthusiasts, offering a balance of flavor and strength with notes often involving nuts, coffee, or mild spice.
Full: Bold and robust, these are typically rich with notes of dark chocolate, leather, earth, and heavy spice. Beginners should approach these with caution.
Size and Ring Gauge
Cigars are measured by length (inches) and ring gauge (diameter, measured in 64ths of an inch). A typical range is 5 to 7 inches long with a ring gauge of 40 to 60.
The size affects the smoking time and the burn temperature, which influences flavor:
Robusto: Short and stout (approx. 5x50). A popular choice offering a concentrated flavor and a smoke time of about 45-60 minutes.
Toro: A slightly longer version of the Robusto (approx. 6x50).
Churchill: Long and substantial (approx. 7x48). Offers a longer, cooler smoke, typically 90 minutes or more, allowing the flavors to evolve slowly.
Shape (Vitola)
Parejo: The standard, straight-sided cigar (like the Robusto, Toro, Churchill examples above).
Figurado: Irregularly shaped cigars that taper at one or both ends, such as the Torpedo (pointed head) or Perfecto (closed at both ends, bulbous in the middle).
