A Beginner’s Guide to Cuts and Lights: Essential Tools and Techniques
The ritual of preparing a cigar is as important as the smoke itself. A bad cut or a rushed light can ruin even the finest cigar. Mastering this process is about patience and precision.
The Cut: Opening the Gateway
The goal of cutting a cigar is to create a clean, unobstructed opening for the smoke without unraveling the wrapper leaf. You always cut the cap (the closed, rounded end) and never the foot (the open, lighting end).
Here are the primary methods:
The Straight Cut (Guillotine): The classic and most reliable method. A sharp guillotine cutter provides a clean, even slice across the cap, ensuring a smooth draw. The key is using a very sharp blade and cutting just above the cap line.
The Punch Cut: This tool removes a small, circular plug from the cap rather than slicing the entire top off. It concentrates the smoke, which some aficionados prefer, but can sometimes lead to a tighter draw.
The V-Cut (Cat's Eye): This cutter makes a V-shaped wedge in the cap. It provides a good draw while keeping the cap mostly intact, minimizing the chance of loose tobacco flakes in your mouth.
The Light: The Art of Toasting
Never rush the lighting process. Avoid using lighters with strong chemical fuels (like Zippos) or scented candles, as these flavors will permanently taint your cigar.
Recommended Tools:
Butane Torch Lighters: The most popular choice for modern smokers. Butane is odorless and burns hot and clean.
Cedar Spills: Thin strips of cedar wood, perfect for a traditional, pure light that imparts a pleasant cedar aroma.
Wooden Matches: Use long wooden matches, letting the sulfur burn off completely before applying the flame to the cigar.
The Technique:
Toast the Foot: Hold the cigar just above the tip of the flame (not in it) and slowly rotate it until the entire rim of the foot is evenly charred or "toasted." This prepares the tobacco for ignition.
Ignite and Puff Gently: Once toasted, place the cigar in your mouth. Bring the flame slightly closer to the foot while gently puffing and rotating the cigar until the end glows red evenly.
Check the Burn: Blow lightly on the lit foot to ensure the burn is even across the entire surface. If one side is dark, apply the flame to that spot until it catches up.
